Acai Berry - 5 Reasons Why You Should Eat This Super Fruit

We’ve all heard of acai, one of the original Superfoods to come to the market. Your favourite café probably serves an acai bowl or acai smoothie on their menu. It has become a common addition to many of our diets over the past decade, but do you know why you should be eating acai?

What is Acai?

Originating in the Amazon, acai (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) berries are a deep purple coloured fruit harvested from the acai palm tree. This delicious berry has incredibly high levels of antioxidants and is also a source of beneficial flavonoids and polyphenols.

Indigenous Brazilian tribes have consumed acai berries for thousands of years for their amazing nourishing properties. Legend has it that acai berries saved an indigenous Brazilian tribe from starvation during a time of severe drought. The leader of the tribe Chief Itaki sadly lost his daughter Iaca during the harsh times but named the life-saving acai berry (Iaca spelt backwards) in her honour.


Why should we eat acai berries?

Acai berries are a known superfood being nutrient dense and with high antioxidant levels. A great, healthy addition to your diet, and one that tastes good too!


  1. High levels of antioxidants

Antioxidants reduce the damaging effects of free radicals throughout the body. Oxidation can cause our bodies to age, in both appearance and how our cells function. Acai berries have one of the highest known levels of antioxidants, boasting an ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) score higher than other berries such as blueberries and cranberries. Anthocyanins (the antioxidants that give acai berries their deep purple colour) are thought to be excellent for heart health and good at preventing the oxidation of cholesterol.

Acai are packed full of vitamins and minerals making them  a smart addition to your diet. They contain amino acids which help promote muscle performance, energy production, endurance and strength. Acai berries contain as much Vitamin C as blueberries as well as containing Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3 and E. They’re also a source of calcium, magnesium, zinc and copper.

The fibre found in the skin and pulp of the acai berry may aid in keeping our digestive system in a clean and functional state. The berries are a source of dietary fibre, which can help to prevent digestive issues such as constipation.

Acai berries are thought to increase the function of immune cells due to their high levels of Vitamin C and ellagic acid. These phytochemicals strengthen our body’s cells, making it easier to fight off infections or invasions of free radicals.


  1. Omega fatty acids

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats that our bodies cannot make and are vital for our health and wellbeing. They are an important addition to our diet as they can help lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels and reduce blood pressure in addition to a raft of other  health benefits. Omega-9 fatty acid (also known as oleic acid) is a monounsaturated fat that the body can produce if the essential fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6, are present. Acai berry contains high levels of healthy fats, largely consisting of omega-3 -6 and -9 fatty acids.
