Our certified-organic Matcha Powder is made from specially processed, young green tea leaves. Matcha contains less caffeine than coffee and is rich in antioxidants and the amino acid L-theanine (the total polyphenolic content found in matcha tea falls within the range of 169–273 mg GAE/g).

Importantly, matcha needs to be protected from oxidation to preserve its flavour and quality. Matakana Superfoods’ special oxygen-resistant, metalised foil pouches are designed to maintain maximum freshness and potency, ensuring you get the best grade of matcha tea possible.

Matcha has an ORAC value of 1384 μmol per gram.

FAQ's

What is the difference between matcha and regular green tea?
Both matcha and regular green tea come from the same plant, but the way they are grown and consumed is quite different. Regular green tea is made by steeping leaves in water and discarding them, meaning you absorb only a fraction of the available nutrients. Matcha is made from specially processed young green tea leaves that are ground into a fine powder, which you consume in its entirety. This means you get the full benefit of the leaf, including its antioxidants, amino acids and polyphenols, making matcha significantly more nutrient-dense than a standard cup of green tea.
Does matcha contain caffeine?
Yes, matcha does contain caffeine, but less than coffee. What makes matcha particularly interesting is that its caffeine is accompanied by L-theanine, an amino acid that is thought to support a calm, focused state of alertness. Many people find that matcha provides a more sustained and settled energy compared to coffee, without the sharp spike and crash that caffeine alone can produce.
What does your matcha taste like?
Matcha has a naturally earthy, vegetal flavour with a subtle sweetness and a characteristic umami depth. Ceremonial grade matcha tends to be smoother and less bitter than lower grade options. As with all of our products, nothing is added to alter the taste, so what you get is the pure, honest flavour of the leaf. It works beautifully whisked into hot water the traditional way, or blended into a smoothie or latte where the flavour mellows nicely.
How do I use matcha powder and what can I make with it?
Matcha is wonderfully versatile. The simplest way to use it is whisked into hot but not boiling water for a traditional matcha tea. From there, the options are wide. It works well in smoothies, lattes with your choice of milk, bliss balls, baked goods, overnight oats and yoghurt. A little goes a long way, so start with half a teaspoon and adjust to your taste.
Is matcha suitable for children?
Matcha does contain caffeine, so we would recommend caution when it comes to younger children. For older children and teenagers, small amounts used in cooking or baking are generally considered fine, but as a daily drink it is worth being mindful of their overall caffeine intake. If you are unsure, we recommend checking with your healthcare professional.
Does matcha contain any additives or fillers?
No. Our matcha is a pure, single ingredient product. It is organic with no artificial flavours, colours, preservatives or fillers of any kind. Our specially designed oxygen-resistant metalised foil pouch protects the matcha from oxidation, preserving its flavour, antioxidant content and potency without the need for any additives.
